Proper Care For Your Fish Pond Maintaining The Oxygen Level

Stress can cause a lot of problems in people but did you know that fish can become stressed too? if you are the owner of a back yard or garden fishpond this is something you need to be aware of. it is very alarming to wake up one morning to find that one of your prized fish has died unexpectedly, chances are this is due to stress possibly caused by incorrect oxygen levels in the pond. Checking and maintining the oxygen levels in your pond is one way of ensuring the proper care for your fish.

If there isn't enough oxygen in your pond water your fish will become stressed. This is an environmental factor that can have devastating effects on your fish and could lead to many deaths. So what is it that causes the oxygen levels in your pond to fall? One of the most common factors is the growth of algae in the pond. Blooming algae can be a major factor in oxygen loss and cahnges in oxygen levels as during the daytime they produce oxygen but at night time they take oxygen from the water. If you have an major groeth of algae it will not take long for the oxygen levels to be depleted and the lives of your fish to be in jepordy.

Algae is not just a problem when it is alive and flourishing but can also be a problem when it is being teated and dying. Sudden death of the algae is an issue as when it was alive it was producing oxygen during the day. upon death the decomposing algae will take oxygen from the pond. A major sign of this would be if your fish are frequently gulping for air from the pond's surface. If they are doing this for more than six minutes at a time you have a serious problem.

If your pond is well stocked with fish you will need to spend more time giving them proper care and attention. In particular you must monitor the oxygen levels as the seasons change. Warm water holds less oxygen than colder water so as the summer heats up you will probably find that your oxygen levels fall. To stop the fish suffering and to care for them properly it will be advisable to install an water-areating device like a waterfall or small fountain, oxygenating plants are also essential for the healthof your pond.

It is not always necessary to have oxygen testing device as common sense will go a long way to keeping your pond anf fish healthy. If you think there is a problem with algae or the temperature has suddenly warmed up do not hesitate to try and introduce more oxygen to the pond. Check your fish regularly and look for tell tale signs like gulping for air at the surface.

At present, there are studies being conducted on harmful and toxic algae. To prevent your fish from dying form these harmful growths keep a close watch on your pond. Maintaining the correct levels of oxygen in your pond will prolong the life of your fish.Taking care of fish is hard work and it demands some of your precious time but the rewards are priceless.
